CHILDHOOD OBESITY
CHILDHOOD OBESITY
by Dietitian Sonam Balasaria
Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children at their growing age. Children who are obese are above the normal weight for their age and height. Overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and more likely to develop non-communicable diseases like Diabetes, Cholesterol, Heart Diseases, Blood pressure, etc at a very young age.
The causes of childhood obesity:
- Genetics, a person's genes do influence their weight and are one of the biggest factors examined as child obesity. It can be hereditary, but less than 5% of the population falls under this category. And it can be reversed if preventive measures are taken timely.
- Eating disorders & emotional eating.
- Offering junk food as rewards to children.
- Unhealthy lifestyle and munching unhealthy snacks in front of the TV for long hours.
- Haywire sleep cycles.
How can you undo the damage or prevent damage?
@ Involve your child in more of physical activities they enjoy.
@ Encourage them to play one favourite sport daily.
@ Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day, this will teach them how to sense the difference between hunger and thirst.
@ Make small and smart modifications in their diet, try to prepare healthier variations of your Childs favourite food.
@ Do not restrict them completely of any food, which can offend them & affect their mental health, Instead educate them to choose healthy food, like Almonds over biscuits.
@ Sugar & sugary drinks are not bad for them, it is your responsibility to use it wisely.
@ Limit their TV and digital time to a maximum of 60 minutes.
@ Do not force them over meals, they understand their stomach better than us.
@ Do not offer them with burgers/pizza and other junk foods as rewards.
@ LEAD BY EXAMPLE, to inculcate healthy habits in your Childs life, you have to practice on yourself too.
Whatever approach parents choose to take regarding an overweight child, the purpose is to live an active and healthy lifestyle.
