SUGAR vs HONEY vs JAGGERY
By Dietitian Sonam Balasaria
Lifestyle changes are associated with many serious diseases including obesity, heart diseases, cancer, etc. Diabetes is also one of those growing diseases. Many people are suffering from Type II diabetes. Some don’t realise unless the sugar levels shoot up high. Knowingly or unknowingly we are consuming sugar in our food.
Sugar occurs naturally in some foods such as fruits, dairy products, processed food etc. Food like rice, pasta, bread, potatoes etc breaks down to glucose. This affects our blood sugar levels. Sugar is just empty calories, it does not have any form of proteins, vitamins or minerals. Consuming it doesn’t give you many benefits, it does harm your body a little more.
Sugar interferes with hormones in your body that regulate hunger and satiety. This leads to weight gain and obesity.
Sugar is addictive, its a reward centre for the brain, it releases DOPAMINE, the brains response to sugar similarly like a drug addictive responses to drugs. Having a small form of sweet will increase your cravings and can lead to overeating. You cannot minimise your control on sugar, if you want to cut down on sugar the only way is to stop having it completely, in all direct forms.
When you see your favourite form of sugar , did you notice you cannot stop in one bite, even if you have controlled your mind and satiety at that one small bite, but you keep thinking about it, you still crave for it and you end up eating other sugary stuff or sugary drinks.
In short, sugar is addictive and incredibly unhealthy and should be avoided at any cost.
We often see, people, having sugarless tea or coffee with some cookies or biscuits. But they fail to consider the amount of sugar in those cookies they are consuming.
Also noticed people replaced sugar with honey or jaggery or brown sugar in their diet? But does it really make any difference? SUGAR, HONEY, JAGGERY all have almost similar calories. The breakdown in the body is also similar process, and the response of the body is also the same. Just because honey & jaggery is little less processed, doesn’t mean it is better than sugar, and can be consumed in any quantity.
The calorie count of 10 grams each, is given below
Sugar - 10 gms - 40 kcal - 10 gms carbs
Honey - 10 gms - 32 kcal - 8 gms carbs
Jaggery - 10 gms - 38 kcal - 9.5 carbs
Brown sugar 10 gms - 39 kcal - 9 carbs.
So do you still think, replacing sugar with the above substitutes is doing any benefit to you?
